It’s strange to realize how often I think I’m simply reacting to life when I may actually be reacting to the version of life my mind has already created.
I wake up worried, and suddenly the day looks threatening. I feel insecure, and somebody else’s confidence starts bothering me. I’m convinced I’m behind, and everywhere I look there seems to be evidence that everyone else is moving faster than I am.
Nothing outside necessarily changed.
I did.
Or more accurately, the thoughts I brought with me changed what I seemed to be looking at.
I know this feeling especially well on the days when I’m already off before anything has even happened. Maybe I slept badly. Maybe there’s something unresolved with someone I love. Maybe I’m worried about money or waiting for an answer I can’t control. Then I open my phone and one person’s vacation looks like proof that everybody else has a better life. An unanswered message feels loaded. A small inconvenience feels personal.
By noon, the world looks pretty bleak.
And if you asked me why, I could give you a list.
I keep staring outward at all the things that appear to be causing my reaction, while barely noticing the thought system I carried into the room.
If I believe my worth depends on being chosen, I’m going to see people choosing and not choosing me everywhere.
If I believe there isn’t enough to go around, someone else getting more will feel threatening.
If I believe I need control in order to be safe, every unexpected change is going to look like a problem.
The world I see begins to reflect the thoughts I’m using to interpret it.
That doesn’t mean circumstances don’t need attention. If the car breaks down, I still need a mechanic. If somebody lies to me, that matters in the relationship. If there’s a bill due, spiritual insight is not going to pay Visa.
But there’s another layer I can miss completely.
What kind of world am I seeing through the thoughts I keep believing?
Sometimes mine looks like a world where love can be withdrawn at any moment, where somebody else’s gain means I’m losing, where mistakes are dangerous, where approval is currency, and where I should probably keep one eye on everyone else just in case they’re doing life better than I am.
That is an exhausting world.
And maybe it isn’t the world itself.
Maybe it’s the one fear keeps showing me.
I find that both unsettling and hopeful, because if everything outside me really contained the meaning I’ve given it, I wouldn’t have much room to move. But if my thoughts are participating in what I see, then perhaps I can become less certain about the picture.
I don’t have to replace it with something sugary. I don’t have to insist that everything is wonderful when it clearly doesn’t feel wonderful.
I can simply notice, I’m seeing this through fear right now.
That alone changes something.
Maybe the person in front of me isn’t carrying my worth in their hands.
Maybe this setback isn’t evidence that life is against me.
Maybe somebody else’s happiness hasn’t taken anything from me.
Maybe the future isn’t already filled with the things I’m afraid of.
I don’t have to prove any of that today. I only have to become willing to question the picture I’ve been treating as obvious.
When the world starts looking especially unfriendly, unfair, threatening, or hopeless, I want to pause before I decide that I’m simply seeing things “as they are.”
Maybe I’m seeing my thoughts.
That’s a different question entirely.
I may not love the answer.
But at least then I’m looking somewhere I can actually make a different choice.
