I often hear the word *function* and think of a role I must discover.

Perhaps there is one ideal occupation, ministry, or contribution that would finally explain why I am here.

This can turn purpose into another source of pressure.

What if I choose incorrectly? What if I have already missed the most meaningful use of my life?

The Course gives the function a simpler name: forgiveness.

The forms may change. My function remains the same.

I can fulfill it while working, caring for someone, resting, or having a conversation no one else will remember. The question is not whether the role looks important. It is whether I use it to strengthen separation or release it.

I remember standing in a parking lot as a loose shopping cart rolled toward the space beside me. Returning it was not my responsibility. I was tired, it was cold, and I had already put my own cart away.

No one would have considered the moment spiritually important.

But my function was available there too. I could leave the cart while rehearsing why someone else should have handled it, or take ten seconds to move it without turning the action into proof that I was a better person.

Forgiveness made the moment simpler than either resentment or self-congratulation.

Today I want to separate my function from the form in which I currently perform it.

I may complete something consequential or do a small kindness no one notices.

Purpose is not measured by the importance of the form.

God’s function travels with me because it belongs to the mind I bring, not the title printed beside my name.
