Conflict can continue long after the conversation stops.
I replay what was said, improve my responses, and imagine the moment when the other person finally understands why I was right.
The argument becomes a private dream in which I play every role.
I remember doing yard work after a disagreement. The other person was nowhere nearby, yet I kept answering them in my mind while pulling weeds.
My body remained in the conflict as though the conversation were still happening.
At some point I noticed that the afternoon had become another room in the argument. The sunlight, the soil, and the work in front of me were present, but I was living inside a scene that had already ended.
Forgiveness did not require me to decide the disagreement was meaningless. There might still be a conversation to continue or a boundary to clarify.
It asked me to stop practicing conflict in the meantime.
Today I want to notice the argument I am carrying into places where it is not occurring.
I may hear birds, finish the task, or become available to someone who had nothing to do with the grievance.
The dream of conflict survives through repetition.
Forgiveness ends it here, in the mind that has been keeping every participant on the stage.
I can return to the issue later if love requires it.
I do not have to rehearse war in order to remember what matters.
