I sometimes try to secure peace for myself while withholding it from someone else.
I want relief, but I also want them to feel the full weight of being wrong. I want to stop thinking about the conflict, but not before my version has been properly recognized.
This lesson joins the peace I give myself to the peace I offer my brother. They are not separate transactions.
That does not mean I must contact someone, reconcile, or restore access to my life. Peace can bless a person from a necessary distance. It means I stop using my mind as a courtroom where the case must remain permanently active.
On a walking trail, I once passed someone with whom I had an unresolved tension. Neither of us stopped. But instead of rehearsing the history, I quietly wished them peace. The circumstances did not change. My body did.
The blessing reached me because I could not offer it without becoming willing to receive it.
Peace does not require closeness. It requires the release of attack.
May it be given to me, to the person I find difficult, and through us to a world exhausted by taking sides.
