121. Forgiveness is the key to happiness. 122. Forgiveness offers everything I want.
I sometimes approach forgiveness as though I am being asked to give something valuable away.
I give up my case, my right to remain angry, or the protection of remembering exactly what someone did. The other person appears to benefit while I absorb another loss.
These review ideas reverse that picture.
Forgiveness is the key to happiness, and it offers everything I want.
The grievance is what costs me.
It requires attention, rehearsal, and continued emotional contact with a moment I say I want to leave behind. I may no longer speak to the person, yet consult them internally whenever I decide whether people are trustworthy or relationships are safe.
Forgiveness does not hand them the key.
It returns the key to me.
I noticed this with a minor conflict I carried far beyond its actual size. Each time I remembered it, I renewed the irritation and imagined what I would say if the subject returned.
The subject never returned. Only I did.
When I finally became willing to release it, nothing was taken from me. I did not lose discernment, dignity, or the knowledge that I wanted something different in the future.
I lost the obligation to remain disturbed.
That is why forgiveness offers what I want. Beneath the desire to be proven right is usually a deeper desire to be free, peaceful, and no longer governed by what happened.
Today I want to notice where I still describe forgiveness as a sacrifice.
I may discover that the grievance has been charging me for protection it never successfully provided.
Forgiveness does not leave me with less.
It gives back the part of my life I kept sending into the past.
