135. If I defend myself I am attacked. 136. Sickness is a defense against the truth.
These ideas require care because neither asks me to abandon practical protection.
I can seek medical treatment, protect myself from harm, and take wise precautions without making fear the authority that tells me what I am.
The defense these lessons question happens in the mind.
It begins when vulnerability becomes evidence of separation: I am a person whose worth can be attacked, whose mistake can become an identity, or who must control how I am perceived because truth cannot protect itself.
I notice this when someone questions a choice I made. Before I understand what they are asking, I begin assembling my defense. I explain the pressures I was under, point out what they overlooked, and quietly identify the ways they have handled things imperfectly too.
Then defense becomes its own form of attack.
The original question may have been reasonable. My answer turns it into a contest in which one of us must be less credible for the other to remain safe.
Releasing defense does not mean accepting an unfair accusation or abandoning a necessary boundary.
It means answering the useful part without allowing fear to write a larger indictment.
I can clarify the decision, acknowledge what I would change, or disagree plainly. I can protect what needs protection without reducing either of us to an adversary.
Today I want to distinguish care from fear’s demand for permanent watchfulness.
The answer may still involve treatment, boundaries, or help.
Truth does not ask me to become careless.
It asks me to stop treating vigilance as the love that holds me together.
