There is no cruelty in God and none in me

Cruelty is not always loud.

Sometimes it sounds like the voice that tells me I should have known better, recovered faster, or stopped being affected by something that happened years ago.

I can speak to myself in ways I would immediately recognize as unkind if the words were directed toward someone else.

Because the voice claims to be improving me, I call it accountability.

This lesson asks me to question its source.

There is no cruelty in God and none in me.

God does not teach through humiliation. Love may reveal something I need to correct, but it does not make my worth the price of seeing clearly.

That distinction matters when I have made a mistake.

I once replayed something I had said and felt embarrassed by how defensive I had sounded. The useful recognition arrived quickly: I had not listened well, and I needed to repair it.

Everything that followed was punishment.

I began collecting evidence that I was less self-aware than I believed. What could have become one honest apology turned into a private trial about my character.

Cruelty did not make me more responsible. It made me want to hide.

If there is no cruelty in me, then the punishing voice is not my deepest voice. I learned it, practiced it, and sometimes mistake its intensity for truth. None of that makes it part of what God created.

The same is true when I judge another person. A boundary, consequence, or honest assessment can serve love. The desire to make someone suffer so they will understand my pain cannot.

Today I want to notice where correction has become punishment.

I may still need to apologize, change a pattern, or say no.

But God does not require anyone’s humiliation for healing to begin.

Neither do I.
