Giving can become complicated when I secretly keep track of what should return.
I offer help, patience, or attention, then notice whether it is appreciated. If the response is smaller than I hoped, the gift begins to feel wasted.
That is usually a sign that I was giving more than one thing.
I remember helping someone prepare for a difficult conversation. I listened, asked questions, and helped them organize what they wanted to say.
Later, they handled the situation well but did not mention my help when describing it.
I felt a small sting.
The reaction showed me that part of my gift had been an investment in being recognized as useful.
Yet the real gift had already returned. While offering calm, I had experienced calm. While helping another person find clarity, my own mind had become clearer.
What is truly given in love remains with the giver because love is strengthened through expression.
Today I want to notice the return I am expecting from something I offer.
This does not mean I must give endlessly or pretend reciprocity does not matter in relationships. Healthy relationships need mutual care, and resentment may reveal that a limit is overdue.
But the spiritual value of a loving act does not depend on applause, repayment, or even recognition.
The gift is mine at the moment I allow it through me.
I do not lose kindness by extending it.
I discover that what I give from love confirms the love already present within us both.
