This idea can sound blaming if it is used carelessly.

Bodies respond to events. Other people’s choices have consequences. Trauma, illness, and loss are not dismissed by saying we should think differently.

The lesson asks me to notice the meaning through which I continue experiencing what occurs.

I remember finding an official-looking envelope in the mail. Before opening it, my stomach tightened and my mind produced several expensive possibilities.

The envelope contained a routine notice.

The paper had not created the fear. My thoughts about what it might contain had already affected the body.

This does not mean every feared envelope will be harmless. Sometimes difficult information arrives.

But even then, the facts and the identity fear builds around them are not the same.

A bill can require money without proving I will never be secure. A result can require action without becoming a verdict on my entire future.

Today I want to distinguish what happened from the thought through which I am experiencing it.

This question is not an accusation.

It is a return of power.

If the meaning came from thought, another interpretation can become possible even when the circumstance remains.

I may still feel pain, anger, or fear.

But I do not have to grant the first fearful thought permanent authority over what the experience means.
